Completely forgot about this, but Paul Simpson is managing the U20s. Before this tournament they hadn't won a game in 20 years at a World Cup. Some of you may remember the U20s played in Colombia in 2011 - our Matt Phillips was playing. They got knocked out without scoring a single goal, failing to beat even North Korea.

But things are faring better this time around and they just beat Mexico in the quarters today. Looks like Simmo is doing a good job.

Here's a good interview with him from earlier in the tournament,

It would be nice if it pointed towards a bright future for the senior team. Truth is thought a lot of that squad won't even have a career as a professional let alone a England regular.

Whatever talent and freedom Simmo has let them play with will be coached out of them with Aidy Boothroyd and Southgate in two years.

The Germans and the Spanish focused on their youth teams, they had success at U20 and U21 level and that fostered into success in the senior team. It's really encouraging there is now some deliberate thought into how we can replicate that success. Also, give credit to Southgate. He may not be the man to lead the national side, but by all accounts he has been instrumental in modernising the whole setup from the youth teams up.

You should take a look at that XI today. These are highly rated prospects at big clubs like Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton. They will hit the familiar roadblock of being too good (or not physical enough) to go out on loan to lower league teams, and too young to play for a PL team. However, whether they will have a professional career is not really up for debate, they will.

Pleased for Simmo. Was a great player for us and did a magnificent job at dumpdale. A fantastic achievement to win a word cup.

The fact Venezuela are contesting a final and iam pretty confident they won't carry that on into the senior side, shows

Go back and look how the Under 20 players who finished 3rd in 1993 got on, with the exception of a handful the rest of the squad ended up playing non league or even dropped out of the game. Most of the 1993 squad were at big clubs, dosen't guarantee you a career. The fact Venezuela are contesting a final and iam pretty confident they won't carry that on into the senior side, shows that this probably won't have any future bearing.

That's not true. Only two players didn't go on to enjoy professional careers (barring a couple who had career-ending injuries). There's a few 'where are they now' articles popping up with people thinking the same we are.

These competitions just weren't that important back then, whereas now the serious countries looking to win future World Cups go there looking to win. Look at Germany and Spain's success at youth level and how they brought that forward into the senior team.

This is how 2017 is going for our youth teams

U17 - Euro finalists

U18-20 - Toulon tournament winner

U19 - Euros still to play

U20 - World Cup winners

U21 - Euros still to play

This has been a really good year for our kids, and it could be an even better one depending on how the rest of the summer goes. Our future senior side's success will all come back to this. And even though not all will make it, players like Lookman, Solanke, Onomah and Calvert-Lewis all have decent chances of breaking through and will have this experience behind them. That can't be a bad thing. And by the way, those guys are getting Premier League minutes at big clubs.

I'm not saying that because we won the U20s World Cup so we are destined to make it. But this is cause for optimism. For the first time there is a bit of sophistication about our national setup and we are creating a programme for success

Ok, fair do.

I don't really know a lot about the Under 20's and don't see the point when we have the Under 21's. Surely anyone any good would play for the Under 21's and not the Under 20's?

Very well done to the squad and playing staff.

Bodes well for the future.
