Ince scored his fifth of the season, adding to his brace at Bristol City in the previous match, when he fired into the top corner with the outside of his foot.
Southern beat Ince to the man of the match award, producing a brilliant performance on his first league start since recovering from testicular cancer.
But the modest midfielder was more eager to talk about Ince’s strike than his own display.
Southern said: “An opposing team can’t legislate for a strike like Tom’s.
“The ability the kid has is frightening. He is on fire at the minute.
“It was a very good goal from start to finish. We won the ball in the left-back position and the ball was switched to Kevin Phillips. He played a couple of one-twos with Ince, and to put it in the top corner from there was phenomenal.
“He is going to be a big player for us in the run-in.
“Hopefully he can keep producing moments like that, and if he does I am sure we will have a great opportunity of going back up.”
As for his own terrific showing, Southern didn’t exactly big himself up.
“It was just a good all-round team effort. I thought everybody played their part,” he said.
“I am just delighted to be back playing. I wasn’t able to sleep much the night before and I’m sure I won’t be able to move much on Saturday ... but it was worth it. I am back in the side and that is the main thing.”
Despite the disappointment of conceding late on, Southern thoroughly enjoyed what he described as a terrific game.
“It was a fantastic football match, really terrific, and a good avert for the Championship,” he added.
“I thought we played really well. We just couldn’t hang on or get a second goal to kill them off. But Hull are a good side, up there with us fighting for promotion, so it was always going to be a difficult game.
“One goal is never enough – it cost us a few times last season especially. “Recently we’ve been the team chasing games. Last night we got the lead, which is what we’ve been wanting, but we just couldn’t hang on. One lapse of concentration just cost us and it is two points dropped.
“But I thought the performance was excellent and we go into the last 12 game with a fantastic opportunity to get promoted again.” Gazette
