Team News

Blackpool midfielder Matty Virtue looks to be a doubt for Saturday's Sky Bet League One home clash with Bristol Rovers.

Virtue has reportedly been nursing a thigh problem after coming off in the 2-0 friendly win against AFC Fylde on July 16.

Forward Joe Nuttall and defender Rocky Bushiri, who joined on Thursday from Blackburn and on loan from Norwich respectively, are among the summer signings who could feature. The match will be the first competitive outing of Simon Grayson's second spell as Seasiders boss following his appointment in July.

It remains to be seen if Bristol Rovers forward Jonson Clarke-Harris is involved. Boss Graham Coughlan has been quoted as saying Clarke-Harris is being assessed after returning to training following a minor operation.

Summer recruits hoping to make debuts include loan signings Victor Adeboyejo and Tyler Smith. Coughlan's Pirates finished 15th last season, five places below Blackpool.

Stats

Blackpool are winless in their last four league meetings with Bristol Rovers (P4 W0 D1 L3) and have also failed to net a single goal in any of their last three.

Bristol Rovers last fell to a league defeat against Blackpool back in April 2000, when manager Ian Holloway saw his side lose 1-2 to the Tangerines away from home.

Ali and George from the Not The Top 20 podcast discuss which Sky Bet League One clubs have done the best business ahead of the new season.

Blackpool have both won and lost five times in their most recent 10 matches when starting the league campaign at home, last sharing the spoils on home soil on the opening day back in August 1989 versus Wigan Athletic (0-0).

Predictions?

Starting line-up?

What to expect from Bristol Rovers?

All discussed here.

Our best bet as things stands is to play a back 4 even though Grayson longer term wants 352. Alnwick, Turton, Edwards, Tilt, Husband. Kaikai, Virtue (if fit), spearing, delfouneso. Hardie, Gnanduillet.

Delfouneso has been decent as a secondary striker but needs must he does a job out wide. I prefer guy to spearing but it isn’t happening. We need to give the front 2 a run of games, Hardie is not a lone striker, he thrives off runs in behind and gnanduillet has been craving a guy to make runs off his flick ons.

Would agree with your selection Sean but I don’t see Larry starting both Gnanduillet and Hardie.

I reckon it will be Gnanduillet to start central with Fonz and Kaikai getting the ball high and hopefully feeding Gnanduillet who is physically strong in the box and can also finish with his feet.

I would then think Hardie would come on in the second half to run in off flick ons by Gnanduillet who may sit further back almost  as a #10.

As for predictions I’m going 2-1 pool, BR are no pushovers and I expect them to try and keep the ball from us, get into a rhythm and frustrate.  They might even score first.

Hopefully they’ll bring a few and the atmosphere should be really good.

We certainly owe them one after last season,  but I'll predict a 0-0, at best.

Wouldn't be surprised if we're still hoping for new signings when we kick-off.

This is going to take time.

I’m hoping I’m home for this game?

I should be.

Bloomfield CLUB 14:00 anyone???

Yes I'll have some of that mate.

I wish the team was harder to pick but judging by Larry's team selections in the friendly games, this is how I think we will line up. I believe Virtue is a doubt for Saturday so Guy or someone else will step in.

Still quite a lot of questions...

- On paper, that team is not good enough to make the play-offs. However, we don't know if the other signings will make an impact. Tollit and Devitt are two prime examples of new signings but don't seem to be in Larry's first team plans at present. I only say this as they were in the squad that faced Longridge along with the youth team.

- Kaikai is an obvious starter but then who would you play on the other side. Delfouneso, Feeney and Tollit are all competing for this position.

- If Grayson plays 1 upfront in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1, will he go with Gnanduillet or Hardie. If we are looking for a goalscorer, then I don't think Gnanduillet is that man. Perhaps in a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 Gnanduillet can play a key role alongside Hardie.

- Macca seems to think Spearing isn't good enough. Do we take it for granted that he automatically plays?

- The midfield creativity worries me. Devitt was brought in to plug this gap but he doesn't seem to be mixing with the first team so doubts there.

- The midfield is pretty much an open question as I don't know who the better players are out of Thompson, Guy, Virtue, Devitt, etc. We need to be in a position where the midfield picks itself.

- The defence pretty much picks itself but that's more to do with lack of numbers in this position. The only question mark is Turton. Is he a decent enough right back to provide support for Kaikai with overlapping runs? Edwards seems to have played well but anything against pace is going to be a worry.

So lots of questions remain with only 5 days to go. We will find out who Larry fancies on Saturday. Hopefully we will have a couple more additions by then.

Onto the match, Bristol Rovers were our bogey team last season so hopefully that will change on Saturday. They are usually one of the relegation favourites so there is definitely nothing to fear. With it being the first game, it's hard to predict but if we do have promotion aspirations, then anything less than 3 points will be disappointing.

Blackpool 2-0 Bristol Rovers

Is that your own work Seasider?

It’s a good post. It’s nice to see talk of football again. 👍

It is. I thought I would put some effort in with it being the first match.

I probably could have summed it up in one sentence - 'not got a clue!'

Still think Mafoumbi deserves to start the season, play Alnwick in a cup game and see how he gets on.
For the last 5 years I've payed very little attention to footy formations and player ratings etc for obvious reasons! About time I get educated!

We got thrashed twice last year by a team that wasn't rated. 13 players were shown the door, and Coughlan has replaced them with arguably much better players - and they still have Jonson Clarke-Harris!!! I think this could be difficult.

0-0 might be a good result.

Clarke-Harris is doubtful for the opener though, so he might not even play.
I'd take a draw.

No surely that would be disappointing? Bristol Rovers will probably be in the bottom half. We have to win these games if we want to improve on 10th.

Just see them as a side we struggle against. Think we still need new signings too. Not confident about the line ups I've seen during pre season.

Well I can't fucking wait for Saturday.

1st game free of the unnamed ones.

1st game for my lad.

Definite win, I'm going for 4-1.

Oh no, nailed on 4-0 defeat now.

No chance.

Just short of 11,000 tickets being sold as of end of play today. Apparently the ticket office has been busy. They’re looking at opening the scratching sheds.

I’m still to get an extra four on my ST and I guess many more will.

I think we should be around the 12/12.5k mark.

I understand that rovers fans are in the south end of the east for  this game. The north isn’t ready yet. Probably let any in the north use the north stand facilities.

would love to go to this but all my money is tied up to my business atm

So, what are our thoughts on line up for the game? This is what I'd like to see, but is Howard injured? I need to keep track of these things again. Hope we bring in another CB at least before Saturday!

                       Howard

Turton Edwards Tilt Husband

                   Spearing

             Guy     Thompson

Fonz                                       Kaikai

                   Hardie

We'll sign two more before kickoff so no point doing lineups yet.

Don’t know where you got your info from Ticket office was dead today when I was in and lad  behind the desk showed me what seats were available and there definitely were more than 3 or 4 thousand left to sell

Wish I had your confidence! Have we even been linked with any defenders?

That is a great turnout. Does that include away fans?

I would be wary too. So many people on Twitter seem to want to exaggerate the figures. I would be surprised if we have sold 11,000

                       Howard

Turton Edwards Tilt Husband

Fonz                                       Kaikai

                   Hardie

Depends what formation he plays. If it's that formation I think you could be right there. Someone will come in for Virtue who is injured and then it's out of Armand and Hardie on who plays upfront. He might even start with a 4-4-2 so he can play Armand and Hardie together.

As Magic says, could do with a couple more players. It's weird to think that Tollit and Devitt aren't getting a mention. I know these were McPhillip's signings but still had/have hopes these could improve our first team.
I was tempted to put Devitt instead of Fonz but haven't seen enough of him yet.
