Southend United v Blackpool

League One
Sat 10th Aug 2019 - KO 15:00
Roots Hall Stadium

Contrasting starts for both Blackpool and Southend. Blackpool will be looking to build on a comfortable 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers and Southend will be looking for their first points after a 1-0 defeat at Coventry.

Team News

Only midfielder Matty Virtue (thigh) remains sidelined for Blackpool, leaving manager Simon Grayson with a strong squad to choose from. A bounce game was also arranged at Fleetwood Town in midweek for those requiring minutes.

The hosts will monitor the progress of striker Simon Cox, who made an appearance off the bench against Coventry City last weekend. The 32-year-old had previously missed a large part of pre-season due to a calf problem. Defender Rob Kiernan misses out with ligament damage.

Sky Sports don't release their match preview until Thursday or Friday so I have to wait until then to copy and paste 😀

Registered on the Southend forum in preparation. Not many comments yet so will probably do this tomorrow in a separate thread.

Going to be a bit windy. Might affect our sexy football.

Away games Southend profile...

Southend manager Kevin Bond on Blackpool threat:

We are what we are from a physical point of view, but we are very aware that they have got that physical presence and they will be a threat in those areas. Everyone will need to make sure we don’t give silly free kicks away, they will be putting it in a box from corner kicks from the first opportunities they get. We are aware of that so we will try and stop as many balls as we possibly can, but when they do we have to deal with them.

What he really said:

‘They are going to try to kick the ball into our goal and we have to try to stop them’.

What he really said:
‘They are going to try to kick the ball into our goal and we have to try to stop them’.

😀😀😀

What Bond is actually saying is "S*@t I messed up at Coventry by not starting the 2 senior strikers and I need to pull my finger out" 🙄

Welcome back to the first proper season for the Pool in a few years. Had a good day at the homecoming when I came up, and some great things have come your way since then.

Few tips for those travelling down, keep an eye on the trains as some work going on, the A13 into Southend has roadworks at the A128 junction and full road closures are expected (not sure of the exact dates). It's already quite windy down here with rain expected but fairly warm.

Away games website is not up to date as the Blue Boar and Spread Eagle are now home fans only. You can probably thank the Pompey fans for that, who last season decided to randomly open car doors of non-football people sat at the lights and started taking swings at them, including mums with young kids in the cars. (so I hear)

There is a Weatherspoons (The last Post) in town which can get busy but serves a few decent ales. It's just off the high street on Western Road SS1 1AS. There is also the Saxon King on Priory Crescent SS2 6QN which serves food and about about a 20 minute walk from ground. Mind this pub though, it is very much a family pub and may not like large groups. There are also various other pubs in Southend which serve food etc. Top of high street near cinema, there are several food outlets also like Bella Itallia, Nando's, Ask, Pizza Express etc. The Fish House at the traffic lights by Roots Hall sells fairly good fish N Chips, but gets busy.

If your staying down Friday night and /or drinking in town or near Roots Hall, there are cameras absolutely everywhere now and a lot of plain clothed police following problems/various stabbings etc (drug related probably). Generally speaking we have high numbers of older fans and families nowadays so you should find the fans are fine and welcoming. Roots Hall staff are now also doing searches on way into ground so don't try sneaking in anything you shouldn't as the EFL and L1 teams are dishing out 3 season bans.

Safe trip down people and have a great day. Watch out for a few new faces in the team. Seen training this week and we look a lot better than last season.

I'm sure those that going will find that a very helpful post.

Tomorrow will be a good benchmark to see where we are as a team. No disrespect to Bristol Rovers but most teams should be beating them at home. Any away game is tough in this league as on their day, anyone can beat each other.

Ideally I would like an early goal and then we have real pace going forward and can play on the counter attack. Look out for Kaikai, rapid!

Predicting results early on in the season is very difficult. After tomorrow wish you good luck.

Cheers. After last season, anything but a relegation battle and 14 injuries at any one time will be a bonus in all honesty. I think we might surprise a few people this season but like you said, early days.

Well even if you are in a relegation battle, Bolton and Bury will make the task of staying up easier!

Yeah not sure how that would work actually. Do the same numbers still get relegated/promoted ?

I hope you lot are kinder to us tomorrow than Liverpool are being to Norwich tonight, Not sure our scoreboard goes over 2 LOL
Thanks for the info Shrimper.  Looking forward to the game tomorrow.

I just have a sneaky feeling Larry might change things unexpectedly. The challenge for him is that he will get criticised if he does and we lose. I am sure playing 4-5-1 will cross his mind and sacrifice a striker.

Welcome mate. Blowing a right gale down here now. Just started lashing it down as well.

We have no idea how Bond will set up. Probably leave half the senior players on the bench and play the U23's. We now have Layton Ndukwu from Leicester and also word is we've been after a ManU player this week but no news on that yet. Cox and Humphrys are both fit as is Liam Ridgewell and Bwomono. Out of our 7 strikers, only one, Tom Hopper, remains injured.

Setting off at 6:00. Just travelled back from Gloucestershire today, driving to Southend and back tomorrow and the going down to Folkestone on Monday.

Fucking knackered already.

You're driving to Southend and back tomorrow? Hardcore. Give us some picture evidence and you will get some serious kudos for that.

You do know I’m a Blackpool fan.... right??

You know it's quite mental to drive to Southend there and back in one day? I say that in a slightly envious way but not for me like!

What can I say, I love me club!

A hotel on the front. It’s for work so I’m not expecting the 5star.
Come on the Pool! Hopefully stream is good on ifollow.
I've got an ifollow subscription and usually listen to the commentary on the app but do you reckon because I'm outside the uk for today's game I'll have permission to watch it or is that a different subscription completely?
Does I follow work on a VPN?
I think even with a VPN, it might not work if in the UK. Heard people say that.
