Here’s how the squad is shaping up based on our preferred formation - it’s clear to see where the gaps are and therefore who Grayson is likely looking to bring in.
For reference, these are the players in their most suited position rather than first choice and second choice, hence why Heneghan is behind Edwards but Rocky and Notts aren’t for example.
GK- Alnwick, Howard, Mafoumbi
CB- Edwards, Heneghan
LCB- Tilt, NEW SIGNING
RWB- Feeney, Turton
CM- Spearing, Virtue, Thompson, Guy, Pritchard, NEW SIGNING
AM- Kaikai, Delfouneso, NEW SIGNING
CF- Gnandulliet, Nuttall, Hardie, Yussuf
I’d say we need a left footed centre half (Macdonald from Derby), a quality midfielder and another option going forwards for if Delfouneso or Kaikai are injured / off form. Would be good to know if Nuttall is capable of dropping in behind Gnands to provide another option in the two ‘second strikers’.
What are everyone’s thoughts?
A lot of noise has been around Tilt’s contract and rightly so as he’s our biggest asset. However, I’ve been looking at the other players whose deals run out at the end of the season and it makes for a concerning read. That said, now we’re Oyston free, even if we’re still in League One next year I back us to keep whoever we want.
There are some which have an option attached so I haven’t included these below. I’ve ordered them in my preference for who I want to sign a new deal.
Thanks to the previous regime, our squad is still prone to large changes year-on-year and that will take a few years to stabilise given the majority of the squad are on crap contracts.
Could we sing these lyrics to the tune of Glad All Over?
“we’ve got 👏🏼👏🏼 Simon Sadler, we’ve got 👏🏼👏🏼 Simon Sadler”
I know Man City do this with Guardiola and it sounds good. A nice way to bring in Glad All Over despite having no music after a goal, feels like a happy medium to me and everyone can join in
Appreciate the content which is good for us exiles and people who haven’t been able to travel away.
Those first 3 minutes were really cheesy, not sure how you get away with that in this day and age.
If you can stick to reporting on the match and the fans’ reactions then you’re onto a good thing here. If you start messing about and doing 80s crap TV then you’ll lose followers quicker than you can say ‘where’s the Ormerod Money’
How’s the ground looking currently? I know there have been a few TLC changes made.
The key one for me is the PA system, really hope that’s sorted for Saturday. Anyone got an update on whether it’s been replaced or if there are plans to?
If there are five players going in the Hall of Fame at the end of the year I would expect it to be:
Shame for the likes of Stephen Dobbie and I would’ve liked DJ, Ince or Phillips in there but each left the club under a cloud which has probably ruled them out.
Anyone think anyone other than the above stand a chance?
It’s gone a bit quiet - both on this forum and in transfer news. In the hope of sparking some discussion I thought I would give my thoughts.
In my opinion - regardless of the manager change - we’re 3 players away from a squad able of competing at the top end of the table. A centre back, centre midfielder and striker. McPhillips knew that and was in the market for them, and Grayson is also aware but wants to look at his own targets.
McPhillips had “bids in” for I believe 2 players. Rumours that that was Hardie and Hope but we can’t be sure. We also know the club has spoken to Charlie Adam who seems to be holding out for a deal at Rovers. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some movement on that in the next fortnight.
Other rumours flying around have been Baptiste and Grimmer as well as a couple of other strikers but I think the main 3 are those above.
Grayson said he was going to take until the weekend to decide on those which we already have bids on, which has now passed, and it sounds like he’s willing to proceed with Hardie but we won’t be sure until later in the week.
I’m expecting to hear something by Wednesday, hopefully tying a deal up by the end of the week, if not 2. That would then give us a couple of weeks to get another one in, and we can add some further bodies in on loan at the end of the window.
That would leave us on 25 senior players signed up for the season, for the first time since the Championship days. And with one of the best managers in the league to boot.
To summarise, I’m highly confident of a positive season but much will depend on the quality we are able to attract this week - I for one back Grayson to spot a good player and he won’t mess about. I’m predicting an 8th placed finish but you never know how far momentum can take you. Would like to think we’d have a real crack at promotion the season after with a target of the automatic spots.
Does anyone feel massively different to this? Would be good to get a consensus on where we are at compared to where we need to get to.
